The Massachusetts Art Education Association (MAEA) is pleased to announce that
Gemma Flavin has been named as the 2016 Special Needs Art Educator of the Year.
This award encompasses the 2015-2016 academic year and honors an outstanding member of
MAEA whose service and contribution to the field of art education merit recognition and
acclaim. It will be presented at MAEA’s Annual Conference on Saturday, November 7, 2015
at MASS MoCA located in North Adams, Massachusetts.
An affiliate of the National Art Education Association since 1975, MAEA is Massachusetts’
professional association for art educators. The mission of the Massachusetts Art Education
Association is to advance high quality visual arts education throughout the state by
empowering art educators to excel in the practice, instruction, promotion, and celebration of visual
art. Members include elementary, secondary, middle level, pre-service and retired art teachers;
university and college professors; museum art education directors; and administrators and
supervisors who oversee art education in many of the state’s school districts. MAEA is committed
to provide opportunities to recognize excellence in the aforementioned categories as well as to
friends and community arts leaders that offer support and service to the field of art education in
Massachusetts. Recipients exemplify highly qualified individuals active in the field of art
education today: leaders, teachers, students, scholars, researchers, and advocates who make
